Suzu is surrounded by the sea on all three sides.
From the land's point of view, Suzu
Yes, but it is completely different from the sea.
Based on the fact that his grandfather, who once lived in Suzu, saved his life through sea traffic, Sawa developed an installation based on the theme from the sea.
The memory of the sea is spun through research into the area.
In Suzu, surrounded by sea on three sides, marine transportation used to be the main way to get around. The artist drew inspiration for this artwork from a family legend; his grandfather once lived in Suzu where he suffered from a serious illness, but narrowly escaped death because of ice brought in from Kanazawa by the sea route. Highlighting real images shot in Suzu, the artwork was composed of a ship, sculptures, sound and light, occupying the entire space of the former community centre. The phantasmagoria of Suzu as seen from the sea and this family story were overlaid on the history of Noto Peninsula.

Born in Ishikawa in 1977.
Completed MFA in sculpture at Slade School of Fine Art in London in 2003. Currently lives in London. He expresses intangible domains such as imaginary landscape or certain senses exist in memories by video installations consist of moving image, three-dimensional and two-dimensional artworks. By manipulating moving images and three-dimensional structures, he realises implausible and yet familiar scene in a given exhibition space which appeal to audience’s imagination. His recent artworks attempt to intersect moving images and exhibition space each other by constructing space through sculptural arrangements of moving images or laying three-dimensional and two dimensional artworks side by side.
Major projects and exhibitions include Lyon Biennale (2003, 2013, Lyon, France), Yokohama Triennale (2005, Yokohama, Japan), “Six Good Reason to Stay at Home” at National Gallery of Victoria (2006, Melbourne, Australia), “Artist File” at New National Museum (2008, Tokyo, Japan), the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Queensland Art Gallery, (2009, Brisbane, Australia), “Carrousel” at Musée du Temps and Musée National des Beaux-Arts de Besançon (2010, Besançon, France), the 17th Biennale of Sydney (2010, Sydney, Australia), “Lineament” at Shiseido Gallery (2012, Tokyo, Japan), “Whirl” at Kanagawa Prefectural Gallery (2012, Kanagawa, Japan), and “Under the Box, Beyond the Bounds” at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (2014, Tokyo, Japan).
Born in Ishikawa Prefecture.
After graduating from high school, he moved to England, and currently works in London and Kanazawa.
After studying sculpture at an art university in London, I started making video works with my friend's help using computer animation software.
Using the time axis of the video and a collage of captured images, a video installation represents a personal area that has no real reality, such as its own imaginary landscape or the sense in memory.
By skillfully manipulating and reconstructing images and 3D objects, while creating a scene that is impossible in reality, it creates a world that feels something familiar, and works on the viewer's imagination.
In recent years, he has worked on works in which the image and the exhibition space intersect each other, such as a spatial composition that captures the arrangement of the image like a painting and sculpture, and a three-dimensional or two-dimensional work. ing.
